Totem Point Sculpture

This charred wood totem sculpture by Christian Nyberg is a striking study in negative space and elemental form. Carved from a single piece of wood and deeply blackened by flame, the sculpture features a symmetrical, elongated silhouette punctuated by precisely cut circular voids and a central ovoid opening. Each aperture allows light to pass through, offering a shifting play of shadow and transparency depending on its surroundings.

At both ends, the form tapers into forked, spear-like prongs, reinforcing a sense of directionality. The entire surface bears the matte texture of charred wood, a result of Nyberg’s intensive process in which hardwood is burned, scraped, and burned again—letting fire dictate the final shape.  It's sculptural presence can stand alone as an art object or be part of a curated wall installation.
