Cherry Rectangular Stitch Tray

This charred cherry Stitch Tray by Christian Nyberg is an object of poetic resilience. Hand-carved from cherry wood and blackened by flame, the tray is gently concave—its surface softened through scraping and sanding after repeated burning. At its center lies a subtle yet evocative three hand “X” stitches. These marks are not meant to hide the flaw, but to honor it—a nod to the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi, where mending becomes part of the object’s beauty and story.

The brass inlay dot in the corner adds a quiet punctuation—an unexpected glint against the matte charcoal grain. Every curve and contour bears the imprint of process: ember-scorched, reshaped, and made whole again.
