CN POPLAR Shallow BOWL #2
This charred wood bowl by Christian Nyberg is a sculptural study in form and fire. Hand-carved from a single block of wood, its shape feels both organic and intentional—softly asymmetrical, with gentle curves that draw the eye inward. The matte black surface, achieved through a meticulous charring process, reveals subtle wood grain beneath the darkened finish, giving the bowl a smoky depth and warmth. A small brass inlay punctuates the edge, offering a quiet contrast—an ember caught in the aftermath of flame. Nyberg’s signature process is elemental: hardwood embers are placed directly on the piece, burning deep impressions into the wood. Each layer is scraped, burned again, and reshaped by flame until the final form emerges—guided more by heat than hand. The result is a vessel that carries the memory of fire, both raw and refined.
