CN POPLAR Shallow BOWL #1

This sculptural bowl by Christian Nyberg is hand-carved from poplar wood and finished using a signature charring process that gives it a rich, matte black surface with a soft, smoky texture. Its organic, undulating form feels both primal and refined, shaped by flame and intention.

A small brass inlay punctuates the rim—Nyberg’s quiet mark of contrast and craftsmanship. The interior reveals subtle burnishing marks, evidence of both the fire’s touch and the artist’s hand.

Each piece is unique: hardwood embers are placed directly onto the wood, burning deep depressions into the surface. After scraping, the process is repeated—layer by layer—before the entire form is returned to the fire. The flames dictate the final shape, leaving behind an object that feels unearthed as much as made.
